5 Night Time Routines That Make Your Day

We all heard it, we all know it – the first morning hours are the most important hours to set ourselves up for our best. Yes, 98% of the most successful people in business, sports, the arts, you name it  – contribute a large part of their ongoing success to their early rising routine.

I’m a big fan of the early morning. Being an early riser for decades now I’ve experienced the benefits myself. Having done extensive research into the habits that contribute to success, however, I’ve noticed that the night time routine is often neglected. Yes, the night time routine!

You see, setting yourself up for your best day begins the night before. The most successful – & happy! – people are not burning the candle at both ends or keep the company of Netflix until dawn. No, the most successful people are setting themselves up the night before in order to have a more productive & more meaningful day.

How? Here are 5 proven evening routines – tried & tested by myself – guaranteed to set you up for your best day:

 

Unplug. From everything. Full stop.

Unplugging from your devices is the most effective way to wind down. Switch off  your devices 30 minutes before you go to sleep & feel the tension melt away.

Unplugging is vital to a good night’s rest & yes also from your e-reader or any other device that emits blue light! It’s scientifically proven that the bright light signals our bodies into daytime modus, reducing the secretion of melatonin which plays a vital role in good & deep sleep.

 

Take a walk

A classic that works every time. Taking a relaxing evening walk winds down body & mind. It gives you the time & space to mentally close the day & the fresh evening air supports you to clear away any lingering thoughts of busyness.

If you’re used to being busy all the time, get into the habit of the evening walk. Within a few days, you’ll notice your evening walk hints your body & mind it’s time to relax, preparing you for a great tomorrow.

 

Reflect on the day

Wind down properly with a reflection on the day gone by. By ending our day reflecting on our role & impact of that day we put ourselves into the right mood for deep restorative rest.

Reflection helps us to give meaning to what happened & supports us in letting it all go so we can slide into the night satisfied & stress-free.

My favorite – & most meaningful – reflection questions before bedtime are:

  1. What happened today?
  2. How did I feel?
  3. What was my most important insight?
  4. How do I apply this in daily life?
  5. What am I most grateful for today?

So while you’re plunging yourself in your comfy chair or taking that walk, relax your mind with these 5 questions. Keep at it for at least a week – I guarantee you – these 5 minutes before bedtime will make a difference to your night & day.

 

Prioritize for tomorrow

Put your mind at ease & avoid the morning overwhelm by putting down your goals and priorities for tomorrow – in any form you want. Review your schedule, list your tasks, go through the points of the meeting coming up, whatever it takes, prepare & prioritize your day.

By prioritizing for tomorrow, you’ll ease your mind into a calm night, knowing you’re pro-active & in control of your best start tomorrow.

 

Read a good book

Relax into the night with your favorite read. Again scientifically proven, reading reduces stress up to 68 %!  Reading lowers your heartrate, eases the tension in your muscles and invites your mind in a world free from your daily distractions. Even six minutes can be enough to reduce your stress levels.
